The Fire Prevention Bureau is dedicated to increasing safety, preventing or reducing fire losses, and ensuring compliance with applicable codes and ordinance. Fire Prevention personnel staff the Fire Prevention Bureau, the Environmental Management Center, and the Fire Engineering Unit located in the city's Permit Services Center. The Bureau is comprised of several units, including:

  • Fire Engineering
  • Environmental Management
  • Inspection Services
  • Vegetation Management
  • Investigation
The goal of the Fire Prevention Bureau is to safeguard the community from fire and environmental hazards through programs providing for adherence to fire regulations, public education, and hazard mitigation. To meet this goal, the Bureau's responsibilities include:
  • Plan check for fire, life safety and environmental requirements
  • Issuing fire permits
  • Conducting fire, life safety and environmental inspections
  • Operating the Environmental Management Center
  • Administration of the Vegetation Management Program
  • Oversight for the Fire Investigation Unit
As part of the Fire Prevention Bureau, the Environmental Management Center (EMC) conducts inspections that focus on hazardous materials and hazardous waste management. Included in their duties are the permitting and enforcement of regulations pertaining to aboveground and underground storage tanks, generation of hazardous waste, and storage and use of hazardous materials.

As the Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA) for the city of Glendale, the EMC is also responsible for administration and enforcement of all six Program Elements of the Unified Program, along with the Industrial Waste program and the Uniform Fire Code.

One of the EMC’s services to the community is collection of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) from the citizens of Glendale, Burbank and La Cañada. HHW may be dropped off at the EMC during the designated collection days and hours.

The EMC also manages the Used Motor Oil Free Pickup Program, which is funded by a Block Grant from the California Integrated Waste Management Board. This door-to-door service for Glendale residents collected 6,300 gallons of oil and 1,600 oil filters last year.
